Notes from Director Jennifer Hill

Well, the official start to summer is 12 days away. Our weather has been very accommodating. Not too much is new here. Not to say nothing is going on!

Quite the contrary….the Farmers’ Markets have opened and the attendance has been very good for the early weeks. As I write this we are making the final arrangements for our two Strawberry Nights at the Oswego Market, they are always huge successes. The Tunes in June concerts at the Gazebo in Fulton have begun too and are also off to a great start. The summer concert series on the Veterans’ Stage in West Linear Park will kick off in June again this year and continue with concert dates in July and August. We don’t want to forget our fantastic Independence Day celebration. The Parade is Sunday, July 6st. This year the Parade will be only on the Westside of the city due to the Bridge Project. We will begin on W. 1st Street at Schuyler Street turning on to Bridge Street and heading to Liberty Street where we will end at the High School. Before ending the evening with a magnificent fireworks display the Syracuse Symphony will be performing a patriotic concert at Fort Ontario at 8 p.m. followed immediately by the fireworks. So you will want to come early and get a good seat to enjoy the entire celebration. As always you can bring your blankets and chairs along with refreshments of your choosing to stay and enjoy the entire evening.

It is also golf tournament season. Our tournament is earlier this year and will have taken place by the time you read this. We were at the Oswego Country Club again this year and had another great member event. We will have much more coverage with pictures and follow up next month. There is always plenty of competition but also plenty of fun!

At the end of May we had our Small Business Breakfast. Nicole Samolis, the owner and president of The Events Company in Syracuse was our guest speaker and she provided a great presentation about how to succeed as an entrepreneur. Let’s see, what else did we do at the Breakfast….just kidding! We handed out our annual Small Business Awards. What a great morning! We had so many worthy nominees. All of the winners are mentioned inside the newsletter. But I do want to make a special mention of our Small Business of the Year. This year’s recipient was Mitchell Printing and Mailing, Inc. We truly surprised John and Kathy Henry. Congratulations to John and Kathy and all of our winners!

Be sure to check out the calendar of events. Have a good month. Next month we’ll continue on with more information for the other events we’ll have toward the end of summer and in the fall. We don’t want to wish it all away at once. We hope to see you at all of our coming events. Have a good month and I’ll talk to you in July but I hope to see you before that!
